Paper collages were the first things I began doing when I returned to doing
art. It was a logical step from some of the techniques I used in paper
restoration. My process is first to stain the papers which often were pages
from century old, obsolete German encyclopedia. (I liked the form of the
Gothic fonts.) This became my palette. The pages were then cut or torn and
pasted onto a paper substrate. Later on I got to staining plain paper.
The material for "North is to the Right", a map of the center of
Amherst, MA, are stained sheets of photocopies of portions of a local
newspaper, enlarged or reduced as desired.
