Herman Moll. "To her most Sacred Majesty
Carolina Queen of Great Britain, France & Ireland.
This map of Europe ... is most Humbly Dedicated ...".
1708-1736 [c.1736]. From
The World Described ... 23½
x 38½" (62 x 102 cm). Outline color. Condition:
Folds reinforced; a bit of creasing along the three
vertical folds, but the usual discoloration is absent;
very good. An
overall picture of the continent, dated 1708. This map extends from Iceland to
a crudely shaped Caspian
Sea, with the major political entities outlined from
North Cape to Crete. Here are shown the interfaces of
the "Germanies" with the Ottoman Empire,
France, Poland, the Low Countries, the Italian
states, along with Russia, Sweden, Spain, Portugal
and, of course, the British Isles. An inset provides a
detail of the connection between the Don and Volga
Rivers, allowing transport between the Black Sea and the
Caspian. |

| EUROPE.
Mathew Carey. "Europe." 1814. From
the General Atlas. 16 x 18" (40 x 46 cm).
Outline color. Condition: Very good.
Show the Napoleonic
era national configurations. The Ottoman's
control the Balkans and Greece; Germany, as
distinct from [East] Prussia, includes Austrian
possessions to the south; Hungary is delineated
separately. Poland extends eastward and
southward, evidently a pre-partition
configuration. Russia is confined to west and
north of the Volga & Don Rivers. |
