How Antique Map Price Record evolved

In the early 1980's, David C. Jolly left M.I.T. to begin an endeavor that has taken his name around the world. He published Antique Maps, Sea Charts  City Views,  Celestial Charts & Battle Plans - Price Guide and Collectors' Handbook for 1983.  Since then the title has been streamlined. It became an annual production, but more recently a biannual. David soon altered key words in the title from "Price Guide" to "Price Record" on the theory that interpretation of the data was up to the user.  The early editions were compiled on a TR-80 computer and printed from dot-matrix copy.

In 1992, Jon Rosenthal was approached by David Jolly to take on the stewardship of Antique Map Price Record & Handbook.  Kimmel Publications was established as a sister enterprise to Amherst Antiquarian Maps specifically to publish the Price Record. Jon was joined by his wife, Bernice, as coauthor of the series. Improvements were made with every edition; atlases and globes were added to the record; it became larger; the presentation was refined.

For some time, thought was given to the publication a compendium volume, but it would have been cumbersome and costly.  Since Volumes 1 through 11 are out of print, the full run of information would not be available. It became apparent that electronics was revolutionizing the assembly and accessibility of data. An electronic edition made more sense.  Fortunately, Jeremy Pool, a software developer, expressed an interest in advancing the CD-ROM project.  While constructing specially designed software, he has combed through the volumes to bring consistency to a database that that has been evolving for more than two decades.

The records of dealer's offerings and auction sales reported in all those books pictured above is now accessible in a single CD-ROM.  It is: 1) easy to use; 2) fast in operation; 3) comprehensive; and 4) fully searchable such as was not possible in the  print editions.

Antique Map Price Record & Handbook,

Volumes 12 through 16, are still available.

They do not require electricity and may be used absolutely anywhere!

The 16 volumes of Antique Map Price Record that have been issued between 1983 and 2000 contain a wealth of information that complements the data that is accessible in the CD-ROM. Fortunately, Volumes 12 through 16 are still available from Kimmel Publications, although some are in short supply.

Volumes 12 (1994) and 13 (1995) closely followed the model that David Jolly developed. In each were a section with News and Comments, Suggestions on How to Use the Book, Lists of References; Book Reviews, a Glossary of Terms, brief Foreign Language Dictionaries (Dutch, French, German, Italian & Latin, all to English).  The later volumes exhibit a style that has made Antique Map Price Record & Handbook a global resource.
