UNITED STATES.  "The Burlington Route". 1892.  Chicago: Rand, McNally. A wall map, 33 x 46 inches. Soft printed color with some bold indicator hand color. Original rods and hanging eyes present. Condition: Some restoration and replacement at upper corners (4 x ½" area at left; 2 x 2" at right into decorative area at right and 6 x ½" along margin); a few very light blemishes. Deacidified, with muslin backing. Now in very good condition; appearance is excellent. Reference: Modelski (RR Maps of the US) #357.

A myriad of railroad lines are delineated throughout the US and into adjacent Canada and Mexico. The Burlington is shown in bold black, other lines in bold red, as are the meridians every fifteen degrees of longitude indicating time zones. Many rail stops are identified; probably most in the western regions. Counties are identified throughout. The date of the map is confirmed by the county development in New Mexico and the Florida east coast railroad the only reaches Titusville and Orlando. Note Texas' claim on Oklahoma's Greer County. Three engravings show the Burlington's passenger accommodations. This handsome maps is ready to hang.

EASTERN UNITED STATES. "United States." 1842.  Jeremiah Greenleaf; from A New Universal Atlas ...; Brattleboro, VT.  10¾ x 12½". Original wash color by states. Condition: a stain in the lower margin; otherwise very good.

This is one of the later maps to show some remaining strange configurations, and undoubtedly is very little updated from the Burr issue: Maine stretches north to the height of land; Michigan's lower peninsula retains the strait western shore causing a distorted lake; Missouri has yet to reflect the Platt Purchase in the west; the "Huron Territory" includes Wisconsin, the upper peninsula, and stretches into present Minnesota. Railroads are developing on the East Coast and in the Middle West, especially in Illinois (but not to Chicago).  Pristine southern Florida appears as an inset.

NORTHEASTERN UNITED STATES. Swanston "United States North America According to Calvin, Smith & Tanner ... The Northeastern States Comprising Maine. New Hampshire. Vermont. New York. Massachusetts. Rhode Id.. Connecticut. New Jersey. Delaware. Pennsylvania. Maryland. Ohio ..." Edinburgh, London & Dublin: Fullarton. 1853.  40x51cm (15½x20"). Original soft outline color. Excellent.

Strange priority system for placenames: Amherst, MA is absent, but North Leverett, a "suburb" and now a crossroads, is present.
