C & O and D & C Canals are shown. The rail
network fanning out from Baltimore extends west to
Cumberland. Steamboat distances are tabulated from
Baltimore to Norfolk, Richmond, Philadelphia and
Washington (204 miles to Georgetown). Populations are
given by decades from 1790 and tabulated by county for
farms, dwellings, families, total population and slaves
- 90,000 of them! |

color by counties, with green and pink border. Browning at edges of
original margin; a bruised corner; a few iron spots
mostly in the margins; else very good.
West
Virginia has yet to be separated. Steamboat
distance are given from Richmond to Norfolk,
Washington and Baltimore; also from Wheeling to
Pittsburg (sic) and Cincinnati. A profile of
the C & O Canal shows it rising to 1,898
feet, with a length of 340 miles and almost 400
locks. A note states "Almost 40 miles of
this work is now (1833) in progress",
information undoubtedly inherited from a Tanner
predecessor map. |
