DELAWARE. Carey & Lea. "Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Delaware." 1823. Drawn by F. Lucas, Jr; engraved by Young & Delleker. -- Map 11½ x 9½", with text, 16½ x 21". Full color to subject by counties, with state boldly outlined. Condition: some centerfold glue staining; otherwise clean and bright; very good. 

Delaware's three counties are subdivided into 25 "hundreds", with the populations given in the text. The proposed Delaware & Chesapeake Canal appears. Roads, rivers and Cypress Swamp to the south are shown. The Delaware Bay main ship channel is delineated, with shoals named.

MARYLAND and DELAWARE. Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. "A New Map of Maryland and Delaware with their Canals, Roads & Distances." 1850-1852. From S.A. Mitchell's, A New Universal Atlas. 11½ x 14". Original wash color by counties, with bold outline on the interstate border; with green and pink map border. Browning at edges of original margin, with nicks at lower right corner; else very good. 

The C & O and D & C Canals are shown. The rail network fanning out from Baltimore extends west to Cumberland. Steamboat distances are tabulated from Baltimore to Norfolk, Richmond, Philadelphia and Washington (204 miles to Georgetown). Populations are given by decades from 1790 and tabulated by county for farms, dwellings, families, total population and slaves - 90,000 of them!

This quality lithographed map is after H.S. Tanner. The title, legend and tables are in German; placenames are as in the American version. Counties are delineated; roads with distances, canals & railroads are shown. Tables give steamship distances.

Railroads, delineated in red, radiate form New York City and westward from Philadelphia. Distances are tabulated for several stage, canal and steam boat routes, some of which are competing. Distance along the way are shown for the maturing road network. County and decadal population tables are present.

This most populous state is well along in its development. Railroads abound; the Erie and other canals are traced. Major roads appear. The New York City area and Long Island are shown as an inset (the immediate city region is given in greater detail on a separate from the atlas).

Downtown Philadelphia from the Delaware to just beyond the Schuylkill at better than 3 inches/mile. The Pennsylvania Railroad winds through the city. Below is a numbered key to 96 landmarks. At right (or below is seen with west at top) are engravings of "The United States Bank" and "The Exchange".

VIRGINIA and WEST VIRGINIA. Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. "A New Map of Virginia with its Canals, Roads & Distances from Place to Place, along the Stage and Steamboat Routes." 1850-1852. From S.A. Mitchell's, A New Universal Atlas. 11½ x 14". Original wash color by counties, with green and pink border. Browning at edges of original margin; a bruised corner; a few iron spots mostly in the margins; else very good. 

West Virginia has yet to be separated. Steamboat distance are given from Richmond to Norfolk, Washington and Baltimore; also from Wheeling to Pittsburg (sic) and Cincinnati. A profile of the C & O Canal shows it rising to 1,898 feet, with a length of 340 miles and almost 400 locks. A note states "Almost 40 miles of this work is now (1833) in progress", information undoubtedly inherited from a Tanner predecessor map.
