MAINE. Carey & Lea, "Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Maine." 1823. Engraved by J. Yeager. -- Map 12 x 9½", with text, 16½ x 20½". Full color by counties; state outlined. Condition: light stains in side margins; clean and bright; very good.

Shown in its second year of statehood, Maine stretched north to the height of land that separates the St. Lawrence watershed from the nearby Atlantic drainage. The border would be contested into the 1840's. Nine out of the existing 16 counties are present, but many of them have been completely reconfigured. The coastal counties are approaching modern form, but Washington and three others reach hundreds of miles to the height of land. The northern geography is somewhat conjectural. Many lakes are named, but there is no evidence of Mount Katahdin.

RHODE ISLAND. Carey & Lea. "Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Rhode Island." 1823. Drawn by F. Lucas, Jr; engraved by J. Yeager. -- Map 11½ x 8", with text, 16 x 21½". Full color to subject by counties. Condition: trace of a centerfold glue stain; a couple of stains in original margins; otherwise clean and bright; very good.

A map of " Little Rhody" alone, unlike maps in which it is often shown with Connecticut or Massachusetts. It dates from the period when East Providence and other towns were part of Massachusetts. Town lines are shown. Some natural features are identified. Most interesting are the many named roads radiating from Providence and others that are recognizable today is Routes 1 and 3, as well as "10 Rod Road". The text note the preponderance of early manufacturing in the state.

Jackson-RI-1840b.JPG (114396 bytes)RHODE ISLAND. Charles T. Jackson. "A Geological Map of Rhode Island". 1840. In Report of the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the State of Rhode-Island, made under a resolve of Legislature in the Year 1839, along with a sheet of geological sections. Map is 20½ x 12"; sections are 11 x 17". Map has full wash color. Both are on onion-skin paper and fold into the volume. The octavo volume has 312 pages with some black & white plates. Condition: Map and sections have no fold tears; map has a bit of time toning; otherwise both are excellent. The book is a different story: front marbled cover and first two sheets are detached; rear hinge going; spine almost entirely gone; remarkably tight from title page on; some light waterstains at bottom of pages and light scattered foxing. A good candidate for quality restoration.

A well executed map with many relatively minor natural features identified such as streams and rivers, ledges, swamps, areas of peat, gneiss and slate outcrops. Cultural features also appear, including mills, factories, hotels, the Stonington Railroad and the "Ninigret Indians Reserve Lands". The major geological surface features are coded in wash color and the map and the sections.

VERMONT. (book with map) Zadock Thompson, 1842; History of Vermont, Natural, Civil, and Statistical, in Three Parts, with a new Map of the State, and 200 Engravings. Burlington: Chanuncey Goodrich for the author. Large thick octavo (9½ x 6")m modern brown cloth; in 3 parts, [4], 224, 224, 200, iv. Map opposite title, Map of the State of Vermont By Zadock Thompson. Engraved by J H Hills. Map is 11 x 7½ inches; uncolored. A first edition. References: Howes T-209; Sabin 95552.

The volume has been rebound with new endpapers and is tight, with no loose pages. There is light to moderate foxing or brown toning in some sections throughout, but not to interfere with a reading of the text. The map is generally clean except for some foxing in the upper Connecticut River Valley and a bit elsewhere, with some offsetting to the title page; there are no tears. Overall, good or better, with flaws as noted.

Map shows town lines, major roads, waterways, lakes and principal high ridges. Part First is the Natural History of Vermont, including descriptive physical geography and the flora and fauna of the state. Part Second is the Civil History of Vermont, and includes reference to the various institutions and a list of newspapers and books published. Part Third is a Gazetteer of the state with a bit about many, if not all towns. Every lover of the Green Mountain State should have this book.
