GREAT PLAINS. G.K. Warren. "Reconnoissances in the
Dacota Country by G.K. Warren Lieut. Topl. Eng.rs.
U.S.A. ..." 1856. From Explorations in
the Dacota Country, in the Year 1855.
Washington:1856. 36½ x 58½" at the neat lines,
plus a profile at right for an additional 3" in
width. Uncolored. Condition: Unfolded, flattened and
laid on rice paper backing; a set of three panels
rejoined in the process with the break virtually
invisible; no browning, but slight staining at old folds
containing title bloc and a few others; overall bright
with an excellent appearance. Will be shipped rolled in
a large tube.
The
map is referenced in Howes (USiana) W118, Storm (Graff
Collection) 4546, and Wagner-Camp (Plains & Rockies)
283, but strangely, not in Wheat (Trans-Mississippi),
although the companion maps from the same source are
entered as 870 & 871. Certainly, this is an
important map of the Trans-Mississippi west. Howes
lists the source volume as "aa", "books
that are quite scarce, obtainable only with some
difficulty, at prices ... (we won't mention Howes' old
prices - they've gone up!)
A
huge map - too large to photograph and show much detail,
hence several pictures which don't do it justice. At a scale of about 10
miles/inch, coverage is from western Iowa to Laramie
Peak in present Wyoming near the headwaters of the North
Platte and St. Vrains Fort on the South Platte River;
north and south it is from beyond the site of Pierre, SD
to the Little Blue River in
Kansas. The whole
region is labeled "Nebraska"; here, Dacota
Country refers to the "Dacota or Sioux
Indians" who inhabited this wide area. At the center
are the "Great Sand Hills" north of the Platte
River. In what became the Oregon Trail, the landmarks of
Court House Rock, Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff are
noted. The far flung region was labeled as the home to the Brulé
Dacotas, the Ogalala, the Ihanktonwan as well as the
Ponkas, the Omahas and the Ottoes & Missourias, but
undoubtedly very few Americans of European ancestry at
the time.
Lt.
Warren was attached to the operations of General Harney,
Commander of the Sioux Expedition of 1855. The map
traces the route taken up the Missouri River, starting
in June, to Fort Pierre, then overland to Fort Kearney
on the Platte, then up the North Platte to Fort Laramie,
thence picking up the White River leading back to Fort
Pierre, and finally overland to Sioux City in November.
Dated stops show the progress of the trek. The earlier
tracks of Long, Nicollet, Fremont and Stansbury are
shown.
This
map, showing the northern plains and the approaches to
the Rockies, portends the vast changes that would come
in the next few decades. Lt. Warren was soon to be
working on the explorations for the Pacific
Railroad.
